A near-annual coupled ocean-atmosphere mode in the equatorial Pacific ocean

چکیده
[1] A near-annual coupled ocean-atmosphere mode in the equatorial Pacific is studied using the NCEP ocean assimilation data set. This fast mode of tropical Pacific climate variability is superimposed on the slow 3–5 year El Niño-Southern Oscillation (ENSO) phenomenon. Anomalous zonal advection plays a crucial role in generating this fast mode. It is suggested that this fast mode can be understood in terms of a coupled Pacific basinmode. It is responsible for the occurrence of some minor El Niño and La Niña events and has implications for the prediction of ENSO events.

Rethinking the Ocean’s Role in the Southern Oscillation
The Southern Oscillation (SO) is usually described as the atmospheric component of the dynamically coupled El Niño–Southern Oscillation phenomenon. The contention in this work, however, is that dynamical coupling is not required to produce the SO. Simulations with atmospheric general circulation models that have varying degrees of coupling to the ocean are used to show that the SO emerges as a ...
متن کاملCoupled dynamics over the Indian Ocean: spring initiation of the Zonal Mode
Atmosphere and ocean model assimilated products, in conjunction with observed precipitation and ocean model estimates of Indonesian Throughflow (ITF) transport and barrier layer thickness, are analyzed to elucidate the role of external (ENSO and ITF) and internal (monsoon) factors in the initiation of the Indian Ocean Zonal Mode (IOZM). The diagnostics show that there exists a natural mode of c...
متن کاملOn the Seasonal Cycle of the Equatorial Atlantic Ocean
Although the seasonal cycle of the equatorial Atlantic and Pacific Oceans have many similarities, for example, an annual signal is dominant at the equator even though the sun ‘‘crosses’’ the equator twice a year, different processes determine the seasonal cycles of the two oceans and in the Atlantic different processes are important in the east and west. In the Gulf of Guinea in the eastern equ...
متن کاملHigh-Resolution Satellite-Derived Dataset of the Surface Fluxes of Heat, Freshwater, and Momentum for the TOGA COARE IOP
The interaction between the tropical atmosphere and the Pacific Ocean warm pool consists of intense but episodic exchanges of heat, momentum, and freshwater. This coupling of the atmosphere–ocean system occurs over temporal scales ranging from that of an individual cloud to the Walker circulation. A unique feature of the equatorial oceans is the existence of a free-wave mode of large zonal wave...
متن کاملAnnual Cycle and ENSO in a Coupled Ocean–Atmosphere General Circulation Model
Results from multiyear integrations of a coupled ocean–atmosphere general circulation model are described. The atmospheric component is a rhomboidal 15, 18-level version of the Center for Ocean–Land–Atmosphere Studies atmospheric general circulation model. The oceanic component is the Geophysical Fluid Dynamics Laboratory ocean model with a horizontal domain extending from 708S to 658N. The oce...
